Most parents believe there is no need for their children to be seen by an orthodontist until early adolescence. However, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children first visit an orthodontist around the age of 7. In most cases treatment will not be necessary at this point, but Dr. Drayer can determine future treatment by monitoring the permanent teeth as they erupt. Sometimes early treatment, before the jaw and face have completely developed, is the only way to achieve the maximum desired results.
How much does it cost, and how long treatment will it take?
There is no definitive answer to this question. Each case is unique. After an evaluation of your case based on observation and x-rays, your treatment plan and expense can be determined, along with the time frame involved. Dr. Drayer will design a customized treatment plan and answer any questions you may have about the cost of your treatment.
What will happen during my first visit to the orthodontist? Will there be a charge?
This is the time to ask questions about orthodontics and braces, and express any concerns or fears you may have about treatment. Each patient will be asked to complete the new patient forms. To save time, this can be downloaded and completed in advance of the visit through our website, (under the tab "New Patients"). The doctor will then complete a thorough clinical examination. Additional information, such as x-rays and photographs may be needed for proper diagnosis. There is no charge for the initial consultation.
Do you take insurance?
We participate with most insurance plans. We will help you by contacting your insurance company to learn what your benefits are for treatment, and we will work out manageable payment plans if you are responsible for additional payment. We will submit claims to the insurance company during your treatment.
Will my braces interfere with participating in sports activities, playing an instrument, or singing?
If you play a contact sport, it is recommended that you wear a mouthguard to protect your braces or appliance. Although it may take a bit of adjustment, you will be able to continue playing a wind or brass instrument or sing without a problem. Wearing braces or an appliance will not prevent you from participating in any school activities.
Will I still need to visit my general dentist while wearing braces?
Yes! While wearing braces it is important to have regular checkups with your general dentist. Sometimes food can get trapped in places you cannot reach with your toothbrush, and cavities or gum disease can develop. Your dentist and orthodontist will work together to ensure that your teeth stay healthy and clean while you are wearing braces.
Do braces hurt?
Braces do not hurt, but you may have discomfort after some visits, as your mouth adjusts to the treatment.
Is it too late to have orthodontic treatment if I am an adult?
No! It is never too late to improve your dental health and achieve a beautiful smile. Treating crooked or crowded teeth, overbites, underbites, incorrect jaw position, or jaw- joint disorders is beneficial at any age. Orthodontic treatment is good for any age as long as the patient is periodontally stable.
